Readers may recognize The Professional Counselor (TPC), NBCC’s open-access, peer-reviewed online journal, but there is another academic resource hiding in plain sight on the TPC website. Every issue of the journal is accompanied by the TPC DIGEST, a collection containing nontechnical summaries of each article written by the publishing authors. The summaries are combined with photography and art to create a publication that can appeal both to researchers looking for more than an abstract and to members of the general public.

“It can take hours and hours of reading to find research applicable to your work, and abstracts can only tell you so much,” says TPC Managing Editor Catherine Clifton Hardman. “The TPC DIGEST allows readers to get a feel for the entire article and its overall themes in a fraction of the time, enabling more productive literature reviews. Plus, the visuals provide a little brain break from pages and pages of text!”

This simplified publication also offers significant appeal to the general public, Clifton Hardman says. “I have friends, family, and complete strangers who have used the DIGEST for school projects, dinner conversation, and feeding their own curiosity. If the content really strikes them, they go straight to the full issue of the journal for a deeper exploration.”
