Every Counselor’s journey is shaped by experiences that strengthen their commitment to serving others. For NBCCF 2021 Dr. Nicholas Vacc Scholarship recipient Lane Madsen, MA, LPC, LPC-MH Supervisee, that journey has been defined by a passion for helping people, dedication to lifelong learning, and a career built on compassion and connection.

A South Dakota native, Lane earned her bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology and religious studies from Morningside College before completing her master’s degree in school counseling from the University of South Dakota.

Lane’s first professional role was counseling women, many of whom struggled with addiction, in South Dakota’s correctional system. Working closely with incarcerated women, including members of Native American communities, taught her the importance of trust, empathy, and meeting people where they are. Reflecting on those years, she expresses that “being able to build trust with the women I worked with was one of the most meaningful experiences of my career.”

For Lane, the NBCCF Dr. Nicholas Vacc Scholarship represented more than financial assistance; it opened the door to lasting professional relationships, mentorship, and other opportunities that continue to influence her career. Receiving the scholarship provided both financial support and valuable professional connections. She also credits the program’s trainings and educational experiences with helping her grow as a Counselor. “There are still mentors that I have connections with, and the educational trainings, whether they’re in-person or telehealth, are outstanding,” she emphasizes.

Though Counseling is often centered on relationships, Lane believes the scholarship also strengthened her skills in other areas. From managing administrative responsibilities to communicating the value of the Counseling profession, the experience helped prepare her for the many facets of her career. “The administrative aspect was something I had some experience with, but the scholarship helped me with those skills while also giving me the opportunity to explain what Counseling is and reach people I might not have reached otherwise,” she says.

Looking ahead, Lane encourages future Counselors to remain curious, embrace diverse perspectives, and step outside their comfort zones. She believes the profession grows stronger when Counselors seek to understand experiences that differ from their own. She believes the profession grows stronger when Counselors seek to understand experiences that differ from their own— “Looking for those unique qualities in people, and opening ourselves up so that we’re not only sticking with what’s comfortable when it comes to Counseling.”

Today, Lane is pursuing a doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision at Capella University, where her research focuses on LGBTQIA+ competencies. She expects to complete her dissertation and graduate with her PhD by the end of 2026.

Beyond her academic work, she has remained actively involved in advancing the Counseling profession. She has served on multiple Counseling organization boards and chapters throughout South Dakota, including as President of the South Dakota Mental Health Counseling Association and the South Dakota Counseling Association.
